AI and Sustainability Top LinkedIn’s “Jobs on the Rise 2025”

Tuesday, January 7, 2025

Artificial Intelligence Engineer, Environmental Officer, and Data Governance Manager are reshaping the UK job market, taking centre stage in LinkedIn’s “Jobs on the Rise 2025” report. These fast-growing roles highlight the unstoppable influence of AI and the green revolution on today’s workforce.

The Future is Now: Jobs That Didn’t Exist 25 Years Ago

Over half (55%) of the roles spotlighted in the report didn’t exist a quarter-century ago, underscoring the breakneck pace of change. But with 45% of HR professionals admitting they’re unprepared for what’s ahead, many organizations risk falling behind.

By 2030, LinkedIn predicts the skills required for UK jobs will have shifted by a staggering 65% compared to 2016. However, 1 in 5 workers feels unprepared to meet these future demands, raising a red flag for employers and employees alike.

Green and Tech Talent: A Recruiter’s Headache

Hiring for technical expertise (43%) and sustainability skills (19%) remains a steep challenge. The demand for “green talent” is skyrocketing, growing twice as fast as supply between 2023 and 2024. Professionals with green skills are reaping the benefits, enjoying a 54.6% higher hiring rate than the average worker.

But the supply can’t keep up. By 2030, one in five roles will lack sufficient green talent, a gap projected to worsen to one in two by 2050. Gender disparities persist, with only 10% of women, compared to 17% of men, holding green skills.

UK Workers Show Grit and Flexibility

Despite challenges, UK workers are rising to the occasion. Over half (56%) are open to switching industries, and 27% are actively pursuing new skills to stay relevant. Gen Z workers hold promise for the green economy, but only 1 in 20 currently possesses green skills—a stark reminder of the need for action.

Meanwhile, the competition for remote and hybrid roles is fierce. Remote job applications make up 18% of the UK total, while hybrid postings account for 40% of available roles.

2025’s Must-Have Jobs

LinkedIn’s list of booming careers reflects a world transformed by AI and sustainability:

Winning in a Rapidly Changing Job Market

LinkedIn is equipping professionals and businesses with tools and learning resources to thrive amid the transformation. Employers are urged to embrace flexibility and address skill gaps to attract top talent.

Janine Chamberlin, Head of LinkedIn UK, calls for resilience and upskilling.
“AI and sustainability are reshaping work as we know it, and the competition for these roles will be fierce,” Chamberlin said. “But there’s hope—over a third of job seekers believe 2025 will bring a brighter job market. With adaptability and continuous learning, we can turn challenges into opportunities.”
