A new study by The Access Group reveals that a significant portion of UK workers are using AI tools covertly to gain an edge. The research, based on responses from over 1,000 UK employees across 12 industries, found that 35% of workers admitted to secretly using AI tools for tasks assigned to them without informing their supervisors.

This trend is particularly prevalent among younger workers, with 55% of 18–29-year-olds acknowledging the behaviour, compared to just 14% of workers over 60. Interestingly, despite the secrecy, 59% of UK employees report that AI tools have helped reduce work-related stress, a welcome relief in the face of rising workplace anxiety.

Dr. Phil Parker, a Health & Happiness Expert, comments, “AI could free us for more leisure time, take care of annoying mundane tasks or give teams time to connect and support each other on a more human level.” He further highlights the benefits for neurodiverse individuals or those managing anxiety, as AI can manage overwhelming tasks without the potential biases of human interaction.

Adoption rates differ across industries, with tech (74%) and finance (68%) sectors leading, while public-facing industries like healthcare and social care report 45% adoption. Despite this progress, concerns around data security persist.
