Technology Contract Hiring Strengthens as Employers Release Projects and Increase Investment

Demand for IT contractors in the UK has reached its highest level in more than three years, providing another indication that parts of the recruitment market are beginning to recover after an extended slowdown.

The latest recruitment market data shows that demand for temporary IT professionals increased for the second consecutive month during August, reaching its strongest level since April 2023.

The IT contractor index increased to 52.7, following readings of 51.9 in July and 48.2 in June. A reading above 50 indicates growth in demand.

The improvement comes as businesses appear increasingly willing to release previously delayed technology projects and invest in specialist skills on a flexible basis.

AI, Cybersecurity and Cloud Skills Drive Demand

Technology employers continue to require specialist expertise across areas including artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, software development and digital transformation.

Recruitment firms responding to the latest market conditions have reported increased activity as organisations progress technology projects and gain greater clarity over budgets and priorities for the remainder of 2026.

Skills shortages also remain evident.

Cybersecurity, full-stack development, software development and broader technology skills were among those reported to be in short supply across both permanent and temporary recruitment.

Temporary shortages were also identified in areas including cloud computing, software engineering and security-cleared IT.

This creates opportunities for recruitment businesses with established specialist candidate networks, particularly where employers require experienced professionals who can join projects quickly.

IT Job Postings Up More Than 22% Year-on-Year

Separate data from the Recruitment & Employment Confederation's Labour Market Tracker provides further evidence of stronger technology recruitment compared with last year.

There were 85,093 active IT job postings in August 2026, an increase of 22.3% compared with August 2025.

Although the number was 1.3% lower than July, August still recorded the second-highest level of active IT postings this year.

Demand varied considerably between individual occupations.

IT Project Managers recorded a 3% monthly increase in active vacancies, while Computer Systems and Equipment Installers and Servicers increased by 5.9%.

The figures suggest that while technology recruitment remains selective, demand for particular technical skills continues to strengthen.

Temporary Recruitment Continues to Improve

The recovery in IT contracting also forms part of a wider improvement in temporary recruitment.

The latest KPMG and REC UK Report on Jobs found that temporary billings increased for a fifth consecutive month in August, while permanent placements also increased for the first time since late 2022.

Across the wider jobs market, almost 1.7 million active job postings were recorded during August, 10.4% higher than a year earlier.

However, recruitment conditions remain mixed.

Overall vacancies are still under pressure and candidate availability continues to increase, giving employers considerably greater choice than during the post-pandemic recruitment boom.

Flexible Hiring Could Benefit Specialist Recruiters

The return of growth in IT contracting highlights a wider trend that could become increasingly important to recruitment businesses.

After several years of economic uncertainty and cautious hiring, employers may be more comfortable committing to specialist contractors for defined projects than immediately increasing permanent headcount.

Technology is particularly suited to this approach, with projects involving AI, cloud migration, cybersecurity and digital transformation frequently requiring skills for specific periods.

The same dynamic can also be seen across other specialist markets, including engineering, energy and infrastructure, where experienced technical professionals remain difficult to source.

It is still too early to describe the improvement as a technology recruitment boom.

However, with IT contractor demand at its highest level since April 2023, active technology job postings substantially above last year's level and temporary recruitment growing across the wider market, the direction of travel is becoming more positive.

For specialist recruiters, the recovery may be starting with the skills employers cannot afford to go without.
